AeroClub HBTU Kanpur
Harcourt Butler Technical University
We design, build and fly aircraft, and share what we learn with anyone curious about flight.
About AeroClub HBTU

HBTU Kanpur
AeroClub HBTU is the aeromodelling and drone club of Harcourt Butler Technical University (HBTU), Kanpur, founded in 2017 in the Mechanical Engineering Department under the Association of Mechanical Engineering. Members design, build and fly RC planes, drones and other aerial systems, and through hands-on projects, workshops and events turn curiosity about flight into practical engineering experience.
Projects
Aircraft design
Designing the club's next aircraft from first sketch to flight: a mini glider and UAV, a more efficient wing developed with CAD and CFD, and a VTOL airframe.
Flight control & stability
Making aircraft fly steadily on their own: sensor-based auto-stabilisation, fly-by-wire and fly-by-light control links, an AI-assisted autopilot, and flight-dynamics simulation in MATLAB/Simulink.
Propulsion systems
What makes aircraft go, and how to make it better: electric and hybrid propulsion for drones and planes, micro jet engine study and testing, efficiency measurements on small engines, and quieter propellers.
Materials & structures
Lighter, stronger airframes: composites such as carbon and glass fibre, wing load testing with sensors, smart materials like shape-memory alloys, and structural health monitoring with fibre optics.
Avionics & communication
The electronics on board and the link to the ground: an augmented-reality cockpit display, RF and satellite air-to-ground communication, air traffic control simulation, and a flight data recorder prototype.
Unmanned aerial vehicles
Drones that fly themselves: autonomous path planning, swarm communication between drones, a delivery drone with vertical lift and wing-borne cruise, and obstacle avoidance with LiDAR or stereo cameras.
Green aviation
Flying cleaner: a solar-powered UAV, fuel-cell propulsion, tracking the carbon footprint of flights, and lightweight airframe materials that save energy.
Aerodynamics
How air flows over wings, and how to make it work for us: wind tunnel tests of new airfoils, CFD studies of lift and drag, boundary-layer control, and supersonic flow analysis.
AeroClub calendar
New events will be announced here.
Flight log
Workshops, build sessions and flying days we have already run. Every event leaves something behind: a model that flew, a skill learnt, a few more people hooked on flight. Open one for the photos and the full story.
